WE WEAR THE MASK

by Paul Laurence Dunbar

We wear the mask that grins and lies,

It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,—

This debt we pay to human guile;

With torn and bleeding hearts we smile,

And mouth with myriad subtleties.

Why should the world be over-wise,

In counting all our tears and sighs?

Nay, let them only see us, while

       We wear the mask.

We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries

To thee from tortured souls arise.

We sing, but oh the clay is vile

Beneath our feet, and long the mile;

But let the world dream otherwise,

       We wear the mask!

P

PARAPHRASE

We wear masks that smiles and lies,

It hides our cheeks and guards our eyes,—

This debt we pay for human lies;

With a broken heart we smile,

And a mouth with a myriad of falsehoods.

Why should the world be too intelligent

To keep track of all our sobs and tears?

No, let them just see us as we are concealed.

We laugh, but, O glorious Christ, our screams

From suffering souls come to thee.

We sing, but oh the clay is filthy

Beneath our feet and long the mile.

Let the world dream otherwise; we wear the mask!

T

THEME

Suffering, discrimination, lying in society. Because the poem is talking about judge and hiding how they feel.
